disabled surfing

Hey, have you ever wanted to feel the thrill of riding the waves on a surfboard? Well now you can!

Disabled Surfing is here.

Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) organise surf days, two of which are coming up this summer. Their goal is “to provide an inclusive experience for all people with any disability to experience the rush of riding a wave.” And that they do! A small army of volunteers are there to guide and help you from start to finish to help you achieve your disabled surfing goal.

People of all ages participate, and it’s a fun day.

Ocean Grove beach offers year-round accessibility, and your family can either drive or walk. (Crossing the Barwon Heads bridge, and flat paths leading to the accessible beach area).

Accessible features:

At the beach, there are:

  • Special needs changing/amenities
  • Wheelchair ramp access from the car park all the way to the sand
  • Specialised Beach Wheelchairs (to suit adults and children)

Year-round beach wheelchair hire:

Their Specialised Beach Wheelchairs are available for use along the Bellarine and Surf coast free of charge by the community at any time by arrangement. This enables a person with special needs to experience the beach at any time with family and friends all year round. The tidal river two blocks from 100 Hitchcock is absolutely perfect for this activity. Gentle waves, and not too deep.

Bookings are essential as they are quite popular, and can be made by contacting Go Ride A Wave on 1300 132 441

The Sandcruiser  has large balloon-like tyres which make for easy access on soft sand and in shallow water and is ideal for people who have limited mobility.
